Turkey Burgers

Normally, the grill is where all the action takes place when Jake and I make burgers (I prep, he plays with fire).  However, with a foot of snow on the ground, the grill just isn't an option.  But just because it's winter that doesn't mean we don't want burgers!   So tonight's dinner was a bit of an indoor experiment with the stove and the onion.  I used ground turkey instead of beef, and I added a little bit of pep with onions and peppers.  It ended up really tasty!  Even loyal beef eaters would like it!

Here is the recipe:

1/2 onion, minced 1/2 green pepper, minced 1/2 red pepper, minced 1 pound lean ground turkey 1.5 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper 3 Tbsp bread crumbs 1 Tbsp oil

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a small frying pan, sauté the onion and peppers in some cooking spray for a couple of minutes on medium heat to soften them up.  I'm really not a fan of raw onion taste, and by sautéing them they get a little bit caramelized which adds a nice flavor to the burgers.  After about 5 minutes, remove them from the heat and let them cool for a few minutes.

In a separate mixing bowl combine the meat, Worcestershire, garlic, salt, pepper, and bread crumbs.  Though it is kind of squishy, the easiest way to do this is to use your hands.  Don't forget to wash them before!  Or after!  Food poisoning is no fun.  As soon as the onions and peppers are cooled down a bit add them in, too, and mix them all together evenly. 

Divide the meat into four equal patties and set them aside for a minute while you heat up a large skillet with the oil in it.  Once it is hot hot hot put the burgers on the skillet so that they can brown.  Flip them after a minute and let the other side cook for another minute.  When I say a minute, it isn't an estimate.  You actually can't leave it for more than a minute or else it will burn. 

After each side has been browned, put them all in the oven until the burgers are cooked through.  For me it took 20 minutes, but I have a big fear of undercooked poultry.  Probably a bigger fear than is really necessary. 

When you take the burgers out of the oven cover them with aluminum foil for about 5 minutes so that the juices can redistribute (or at least that's what they say).   It's time to eat!
